This has been such an enjoyable week working with some very motivated and talented young jazz students – so eager and willing to learn about this great music. Bonus: getting to work alongside some of the area’s best musician/educators – and having a great time doing it.

Ahmad Jamal: Poinciana 2012

A recent version of a classic. Enjoy the absolute commitment to the groove, especially from about 4:54 on.
With Reginald Veal, bass, Herlin Riley, drums, Manolo Badrena, percussion.
Pure joy.

Philly Joe Jones: Nutty

Philly Joe Jones takes five brilliant choruses (plus 16 bars for good measure) on Thelonious Monk’s “Nutty.”

Sing the tune to yourself throughout (hint: [if you don’t know the tune] – listen for the first two beats at the start of every 8 bar phrase, as well as beats 3 & 4 in the third bar of each 8 bar phrase.) It’s a wonderfully constructed solo. The full concert (with somewhat diminished audio quality) can also be viewed here.
